Quotes From the Classic Novel Black Boy

Quotes From the Classic Novel Black Boy Black Boy  by Richard Wright was first published in 1945. This autobiographical novel was a bestseller, and it is an important 20th-century work of literature. Another famous novel by Richard Wright, Native Son, was published in 1940. Here are a few quotes from Black Boy. Black Boy Quotes The faint cool kiss of sensuality when dew came onto my cheeks and shins as I ran down the wet green garden paths in the early morning. Im hungry now, but I wont live with you. Im doing all I can, When you get through, kiss back there. White, red and black, but quickly tells him to hush, saying, Theyll call you a colored man when you grow up. Do you mind, Mr. Wright? You cant eat a dead dog, can you? If I kissed my elbow, I would turn into a girl. At the age of twelve, before I had had one full year of formal schooling, I had a conception of life that no experience would ever erase, a predilection for what was real that no argument could ever gainsay, a sense of the world that was mine and mine alone, a notion as to what life meant that no education could ever alter, a conviction that the meaning of living came only when one was struggling to wring a meaning out of meaningless suffering. I said to myself, that boy just doesnt know what hes doing... The naked will of power seemed always to walk in the wake of a hymn. You ought to know God through some church. Even if that isnt right, its not far wrong. I never saw a dog bite that could really hurt... the principals speech is the better speech. My ass is tough and quarters is scarce. This was the culture from which i sprang. This was the terror from which I fled. Color hate defined the place of black life as below that of white life... Having been thrust out of the world because of my race, I had accepted my destiny by not being curious about what shaped it. Trying to please everybody, I pleased nobody... We must have a purge. You lost people! I lived in the South and I never saw any chain gangs. Get out of our ranks! I would send other words to tell, to march, to fight, to create a sense of the hunger of life that gnaws in us all, to keep alive in our hearts a sense of the inexpressibly human.

Alaska Coffee Company

Sure Powell was given input by his retail managers, employees and customers, but he wasn’t given any advice from people that new the company inside and out. All the people that offered him advice had no knowledge regarding the financials or other intricate facets of the company. If he had a board of directors he might be able to make more informed decisions that better serve the company as a whole. It is clear he also didn’t have a clear process for managers to go through to implement changes and or suggestions. The chain of command was vague and rarely used except by going directly to or through him. His attitude of â€Å"let it rip† is great because it gives employees freedom to thing outside the box and make them feel like they are a major part of the company but does not give any structure to them. His marketing background is most likely a key contributor to the company’s success in implementing new products and keeping customers coming back but with no real experience in running a company before this he lacked the human resource skills necessary for a company to thrive which is clear in his passive leadership role. External Environmental Analysis Some of the key external forces with company were in the beginning not really having any competition which let the company grow and lock down a loyal customer base. Also with the Alaskan environment suiting coffee drinkers because of the mild to colder weather. Staying confined in one city also helped the brand name grow through word of mouth and helped lock down business opportunities. Having a roaster facility in the city also cut down on expenses and helped keep the coffee fresh which was one of their staple trademarks to serve the freshest coffee possible. Internal Environmental Analysis Some of the key internal forces for ACC were the fact that the company was built on loyal workers who stayed in the company due to chances for promotion and growth. Along with that and Powell’s leadership style it let employees act somewhat freely and have input into a company that strived to stay away from a corporate feel. The quality of the products that they offered also helped them since they were considered to have the top of the line products some of which were considered to be the best in the world. Having a small chain of command is also beneficial to the employees because it allows them to get things done relatively quickly without having to wait for it to go through many different levels of management. With most customers saying that the coffee was addicting and the atmosphere was very pleasant it leads to a happy environment for customers and workers alike allowing for the business to strive. Another problem of the external environment is that the shops were not strategically located. The areas that they were placed in were researched to some extent but not fully like a major company like Starbucks would do to make sure they can get the most out of the market. Not only that but they didn’t own all the building or locations that they were in having leased some of the spaces with only year contracts. SWOT Analysis The opportunities to grow for the ACC seemed to be limitless since they had already successfully competed with local competition and it did not affect their bottom line to a level of concern for them until, world conglomerate Starbucks entered the scene. Once they came on scene it became clear that competition would become a threat and opportunities could and would shrink. This was and is the biggest threat to ACC since Starbucks is already a well known product that strives to give customers the â€Å"Starbucks Experience†. This is where the customer can feel comfortable getting the same service and products at any store in the world compared to ACC’s differently styled shops and styles of running the stores. This is probably of the greatest concern since most of their stores have different layouts and feels you can’t go to one ACC store and then go to another and feel like it is just like the one you already visited. One strength that ACC has is that it is a local company built on staying small and having a non corporate feel. They also strive to employee young workers in a state that is economically stricken and worried about their young adults leaving the state to live elsewhere. One weakness I believe that they have is that their merchandise can be over priced and even though started to compete with lower priced items there were no real studies done on how well the products would do. One of their major weaknesses is their human resources department and their lack of technical support. They switched to new major software with no one that could fix a problem if one occurred. Business-Level Strategy Their strategy was to find a way to keep their customers loyal while offering the best possible choices in specialty coffees and to help contribute to the great state of Alaska’s economy. Their potential for success I believe is still quite good. As long as Powell can overhaul is leadership strategy and his chain of command, I think they could become even more profitable than they already are. He needs to make a lot of changes but he has the right idea and now he just needs to build on it. Even though it may not be the Alaskan way of doing things he needs to come up with written ways and policies to go about key things in his business. The communication chain also must be improved for the business to continue to be successful. Cooperative Strategy ACC has some key alliances in place already with major retailers already selling their products in wholesale as well as, disturbing them as needed. Having an alliance with an already established local produce market has obviously been key to their early success and I would guess that those are the stores that continue to post the most profits. Since they do not have a written agreement in place I would recommend that he do so because if he were to lose those locations to say Starbucks, it could be detrimental to his business. Even though some of the major retailers already offer Starbucks products to the public, it is important that ACC stays on good terms with them so as not to lose their business since they are solely confined to Alaska any lose of a major retailer could have vastly negative effects. It is also key that stay in good relationships with the companies that they do their major business with for the same reasons as above. Options and Recommendation In order for ACC to stay in the specialty coffee market, they will need to do some drastic overhauling. Starting with Powell, he needs to establish a direct chain of command and follow through with it. He already gives managers leeway with projects but he has to help them make more informed decision so that he will not have to cancel projects. He also needs to bring in a financial analyst to help teach his managers how to budget and be more open with the financials of the business. After that he needs to revamp his human resource department and definitely bring in an IT specialist to help deal with any software issues. While he also needs to bring in people to train all the essential employees on how to use the software adequately enough that they will be able to teach new employees. I would say he then needs to have a clear line of vision of where he wants the company to go and how he wants it to get there. In order to do that I believe he needs a committee or a board of directors to help weigh in on decisions and help spark new ways and ideas of innovating and implementing strategies. It is also apparent that he needs to upgrade his facilities so that they can operate at full capacity which will also help get rid of some of the overhead he has. Then he needs to establish one way that all stores will look and future stores will be laid out. The one thing that he may not want to do because it may seem like they are going corporate but there are too many uncertainties from one store to the next. They do not have to be identical but the way things are done internally and as far as customer service goes that should be. Overall I think ACC can last and be the main Specialty Coffee supplier in Alaska he just needs to do a little overhauling.

Olaudah Equiano - Essay Example Moreover, in these instances, we might say that freedom is imaginary. Imaginary in the sense that the subjects will, which was the core of his being, was stripped of from him as he then become a slave by none of his choice or against of his will. Here, we can begin to identify or had first identified the points or key features in the system of African slavery. It is in the reason of adopting the context of how was his will being scarce or limited for him on his state as a slave. In this manner, the idea or condition of its identity as a slave connotes with less value of his being, and that his being becomes only mechanical comparing to a puppet having its body but doesn't have a mind of its own. These instances were seen through the moment of his captivity with her sister, the trading of which he was sold as a slave and his experience then as a slave having masters that would decide for him of his actions. Second, the manner of treatment the subject experience on navigation adds more suffering he had as a slave on the boat.

Answer the questions - Essay Example The paper takes into account the quality of voluntary narrative disclosure, evaluates the overall presentation of the report and the impact of reporting corporate responsibility matters on the information received by users regarding corporate performance of Imperial Tobacco. Finally, an evaluation of the IIRC agenda upon the quality of financial information coupled with the role of the accountant in safeguarding this agenda is undertaken. Viewing from the development of information disclosure system, voluntary disclosure appears after compulsory information disclosure (Tian & Chen, 2009). Specifically, the paper addresses the use of voluntary reporting on the Annual General Meeting notice. Quality of Voluntary Narrative Disclosure at Imperial Tobacco: Imperial Tobacco has made bold steps in ensuring that it integrates corporate responsibility into its ordinary financial operations. The firm understands that it has social and economic roles to play in order to safeguard positive gains already made by other players in society. The issues that ITG generally endeavors to engage in at various levels, according to the 2012 financial reports include: 1) Tackling child labour, The company understands the temptation that comes with the expectation for higher returns and it has undertaken to fight the vice of child labour at all levels of production. As a result, we joined the movement â€Å"Eliminating Child Labour in Tobacco Foundation† where ITG is a board member. 2) Consumer support: Various municipalities have lately come up with extremely exaggerated laws in the company’s view not only undermine free trade in tobacco products, but also limit the rights of the consumer to the extent they are prevented from freely enjoying their freedom at using tobacco products. 3) Response to environmental challenges: Among the most common environmental challenges associated with tobacco use is emission of carbon dioxide. The company has lately adopted latest technolo gy in cigarette manufacturing and as a result the products have seen a 4% reduction in carbon dioxide emission, as research into how to reduce this rate further continues. Furthermore, the company has reduced energy consumption by 5%. 4) Fighting illicit trade: The sale of counterfeit products bearing the company’s name is seen as a major blow to the trust bestowed upon the company by consumers of its products, and therefore the company has made bold steps in ensuring that this vice dies completely. The company has employed personnel in various major shipping centers to track any suspicious trade in ITG’s products while working closely with local authorities. 5) Job creation: Being a multi-national, ITG Plc has directly and indirectly employed thousands of persons who are instrumental in the company’s daily operations while scooping their living out of the mutual relationship thus established. 6) Issuance of dividends Each financial year, the company establishes a certain amount of returns per share owned by shareholders and disperse the same to the esteemed shareholders who gladly get returns for their trust in the company and their choice to invest in Imperial Tobacco. The 2012 annual report surpassed all other reports given earlier, especially due to the attempt to indicate corresponding figures alongside the activities. The ratios relating to various aspects of the report are easy to work out, since all the required figures are

Tennessee Williams Essay Example for Free

Tennessee Williams Essay Elia Kazan once said of Tennessee Williams that Everything in his life is in his plays, and everything in his plays is in his life. This statement could not possibly be more correct as every main character in A Street Car Named Desire whether it is their situation, physical description or personality traits can be linked to somebody who had played a role in Williams life. Firstly, the relationship between Stella and Stanley reflects that of Williams own parents. His family life was wracked with violent arguments and a tense atmosphere, which is clearly displayed in the play by Mr and Mrs Kowalski. Stellas attitude towards her marriage can be compared to that of Williams own mother Edwina. Stella says of Stanleys violent behaviour that people have got to tolerate each others habits, I feel that Williams depicted his own mother when creating Stella as he and his sister Rose often encouraged his mother to leave their abusive father but she was adamant to stay. It could be also said that the relationship between Stella and her sister Blanche is like the one Williams had with his sister Rose. Blanche is obviously mentally unbalanced and requires constant care and attention from Stella, however she is mortified when Blanche is committed to the asylum asking Eunice, What have I done to my sister? This is an event in the play that would certainly perturb Stella physiologically for the rest of her life. This echoes Williamss life because his sister had a full frontal lobotomy performed on her with the consent of her mother, this deeply disturbed Williams and I think there is a hint of this displayed in Blanches mentality and Stellas attitudes towards it. He also took care of his sister for the majority of her life as Stella did for Blanche before she left Belle Reve and also in the painful months before she was committed. Stella dotes on her sister and I think Williams felt the same way for his sister Rose. Blanche is the main character in the play but it can be difficult to define how Williams would feel close to her. I think however the issue of sexuality is what his empathy with Blanche is constructed of. Blanche is promiscuous and gives away her love freely but all of this is because of past rejection and heartache. Blanche was married when she was very young but she caught her husband in bed with another man and at the time when this was written, homosexuality was looked upon as disgusting, abnormal and considered a sin. Williams was a homosexual and perhaps this situation was his way of adding his personal feelings and issues that had affected him into Blanches persona. After consideration however, I actually feel that Williams feels closest to Stanley. Williams actually had a close friend named Stanley Kowalski when he was forced to work at the International Shoe Company for his father. Even though he is considered the villain of the play, I think Williams saw his father in Stanley. The violence he witnessed in his early years obviously affected him deeply and perhaps he felt that all marriages were in fact based on desire and sex as opposed to love. Perhaps this is why he was homosexual. Also, I think Stanley has some of the same traits as his creator, Stanley is a heavy drinker and gambler and these are problems that ailed Williams during the course of his life. It would appear that Williams never had the luxury of the truth about his familys issues being concealed from him I think this is why he made Stanley such a realist and allowed him to expose Blanche. It is clear that Williams was never expecting a happy ending both in the play and his life. My personal feelings are actually very different. Although I can understand why Williams would feel close to Stanley I have no empathy for the character myself. The person I feel closest to in the play is actually Mitch. I would like to think Mitch could be defined as the hero of the play; one of Blanches first observations of Mitch is that he seems different from the others. Mitch was Blanches ticket to happiness and if it werent for Stanley all of this could have been possible. I think the reason why I feel so close to Mitch is because of his touching behaviour in Scene eleven. When he realises what is happening to Blanche he threatens to kill Stanley for what he has done but his emotions and love for Blanche overcome him and he collapses at the table sobbing. Stanley may be the king but Mitch is a human being at least.

Break Stalin :: essays research papers

Break Stalin Destalinization: A Wise Political Strategy Although many of his ideas did not bring the expected results, Nikita Khrushchev policies of de-Stalinization were politically wise. He went against many of Stalin’s tyrannical policies and gave the people a much greater sense of freedom. In the process known as “de-Stalinization';, legal procedures were restored, some greater degree of meaningful public controversy was permitted, forced labor camps were closed and the secret police tactics of Stalin’s era were erased. Stalin’s method of personal rule was replaced by group rule and more orderly processes of government, the terror apparatus was largely dismantled, the economy was notably modernized and foreign policy was conducted with much greater diplomatic initiative and flexibility. There was free political discussion, a standard forty-hour work week where people were free to change jobs, better government planning on production, and eased travel re strictions over the “Iron Curtain';. In the process of de-Stalinization the cities that were once named in honor of Stalin were given new names or returned to their old names1. The statues and pictures of Stalin were destroyed and letters were sent to families of those who were killed in battle, which criticized Stalin’s weak leadership during the time of the war. Stalin’s grave was vandalized during this process, and Khrushchev gained approval from the West. These policies were used to erase the past and ease the minds of those who suffered under the dictator2. Khrushchev worked to denounce his former leaders doings and clean up the image of the nation on a worldwide scale. Khrushchev worked hard to be agreeable with the majority of people he ruled. He sought to contrast his own present policies with the extremities of Stalinism, and therefore restore public confidence in the Soviet system.3 Perhaps the most notable example of de-Stalinization was wher e Khrushchev denounced Stalin and criticized the dictator along with those who agreed with his views. These views which murdered so many Russian Citizens. At the 20th All-Union Party Congress (1956) where Khrushchev delivered a “secret'; report on “The Personality Cult and Its Consequences,'; bitterly denouncing the rule, policies, and personality of Stalin.4 The speech was supposedly kept a secret so that the Capitalist media would not receive word of it and gain an edge over the Communists if they knew of the problems occurring within the party. Khrushchev accused Stalin of being responsible for mass murders and deportations, the German invasion during World War II (1939-1945), and the USSR’s

This week end is one of my favorite ones because though my family is not as big as many of the families that I know, we do have a lot of fun specially when it comes to watching the base ball game with them, we cheer for our home town team that is doing very good and is playing for the Championship. On Sunday we woke up early had a nice breakfast and then head to church where I also meet with some of my other relatives and so I make much of that little time to catch up on what is going on in their lives and try to work out how we can spend some more quality time together sometime in the week. My father took us for lunch to a nice restaurant for a wonderful lunch, later that evening we all start to get things ready for another week. Spending time with my family is very important to me and also for them and I can say that my father spend a lot of time far from us so whenever he is on holydays we make it more special and we spend all the time we can together and so comes the end of another wonderful weekend with my folks and I am very much grateful for my loving family.

Good People David Lindsay Abaire Essays Good People David Lindsay Abaire Essay Good People David Lindsay Abaire Essay Some churches do that, but not SST. Vinci?s. And your grandmother had passed by then, so there was no dinner to go to. So your mother goes into Flagmans, and shes out to here. (indicates belly) Whens Jimmys birthday? STEVE January. Right, so shes out to here, and in this big coat. Remember that black coat she always wore? Yeah. And shes walking up and down the aisles, slipping things in the pockets potatoes, and Cans Of cranberry sauce, cookies, because you guys goat eat, right? So she gets whatever she can fit in that big coat, and comes waddling up to my register. And know somethings up, but I cant quite figure it out. So, Im like, Hey Mary, how are the kids? And she doesnt want talk obviously, shes just trying to push through the line, Oh, thefts good, I was just looking for something, but you dont have it, so Im goanna try someplace else. And then the ham falls out of her coat. It hits the floor right between her legs. A ham. Boom. And I swear to god, she didnt miss a beat. She looks up, real mad, and yells, Who threw that ham at me?! (really laughing now) : Oh, we died. Everybody there. Yaw had to laugh. Who threw that ham at me? She was a funny iconoclastic. Pardon my French. Look, Margaret-? Youre too young to remember. She never told you that story? (beat) No. God, she was funny. Think about her all the time. Your mother was a good lady. Its a lesson though. Youre lucky you dont smoke. Too young, your mother. It wasnt much, god knows -a nickel here, fifteen cents one time -? but knew when went over nine dollars, you were goanna start looking for an excuse to get rid of me. STEVE You know thats not true. Well if not you, then the district manager was. Or whoever adds up the numbers. Why pay me when you can give minimum wage to Chow Fun? That doesnt help your case, Margaret. The racist stuff What racist stuff? Thats her name. (writes something down) You know thats not her name. What are you writing? You goanna put that in my file now? How Im a racist? Look, you wouldnt even be in here if you werent late. And I wouldnt be late if I didnt have to beg someone to watch my daughter, and I wouldnt have to beg someone if I could afford proper care! And Id have proper care if you didnt pay me a shut wage! Margaret-? Please, Steve. Last time got fired it took me seven months to find something, and that was when things werent so bad. Now? Business Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Business Law - Essay Example This paper highlights that   the Council will be liable in negligence for damages to the premises and repair costs. However, where the question of potential losses of profit of 50,000 pounds is concerned, it appears unlikely that the Courts will hold the Council responsible for compensation of such purely economic losses.
